Recent story I found on Digg.
“I’m going out there a week early, if that tells you anything,
” Rodgers told Yahoo! on Saturday in his first extended interview since Favre requested his formal release in a letter the Packers received Friday. “I’m just excited about that first night’s sleep in the dorms, going out and practicing the next day and all the things that will follow”
The Jerk’s take…
As a lifetime Packers fan, I’ve seen Brett Favre bring the Packers from the porcelain bowl to the Super Bowl. (generic?) There was also that 6-year period where we went through half as many coaches and offensive schemes then refused to pick up any big free agents (still happening), and proceeded to get the early boot out of the playoffs, year after year.
My brother mentioned this the other day - what if the Packers had not picked up Reggie White? Suppose they ONLY wanted to grow through the draft… the Packers may not have won a Super Bowl in ‘96. After the departure of Mike Sherman, I continually saw a front office that put together a playoff team, but not a Super Bowl team. We were always a few pieces away from completing the puzzle, but Favre was the border–always the first part completed, reliable and sturdy (puzzle metaphor is breaking down).
So after years of being supported verbally by the Packers, once again their actions show anything but. After one of Brett’s best seasons, we let pride get in the way of a title and let him retire. Once again, we do nearly nothing during the offseason. Building a young team is :::whoot, whoot!:::, but completing the title-town puzzle with a few experienced, knowledgeable, crafty vets might just be the “tipping point.” (Thanks Malcolm)
Nearly my whole lifetime Packers fan-ness has been with Favre at the helm, so I have no qualms in saying that this season, I will be cheering on #4 and the Packers, even if they are on different TVs.
To stay true to Brett - I may change my mind on this issue in a few weeks.
