Olympic Update: 8/22/08

The Olympics are soon over.  Update commencing…

USA and China are finally separating in the medal count. Although China has an overwhelming edge over the Americans in Gold medals, the US has the overall total in their favor.  China has improved so much from the Olympics prior.  It’s obvious that their strategy was to concentrate on the least popular sports (with the exception of Gymnastics) and try to take the Gold in those categories.  One problem though, there are 81 gold medals given in Swimming and Track and Field combined.  If China’s goal was to defeat the US in the medal count, then they had to dump some time into the most popular and most Gold-pungent events in the Olympics.  A good analogy would be like a Presidential Candidate not campaigning in California and New York.

Medal Count (TOP 5):USA – 30 Golds, 36 Silvers, 34 Bronzes = 100 Total

China – 46 Golds, 15 Silvers, 22 Bronzes = 83 Total

Russia – 16 Golds, 16 Silvers, 22 Bronzes = 54 Total

Great Britain – 18 Golds, 12 Silvers, 11 Bronzes = 41 Total

Australia – 11 Golds, 14 Silvers, 16 Bronzes = 41 Total

Notes:

-The USA Men’s AND Women’s 4×100M relay teams both dropped the baton in the last pass of each race in their respective rounds.  Both were favorites to win Gold.  Their performances were like the magic marker “USA” written on their uniforms; Sloppy.

-Bryan Clay, USA Decathlon Athlete has completed 8/10 events and ranked overall #1 in the standings.  Some say that he may be the greatest Decathlete ever.  No arguments here – it must be his last name.

-A bunch of Gold medals were given to the USA recently.  Most notably: Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in Women’s Beach Volleyball, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in Men’s Beach Volleyball, The Women’s Soccer team (beating the Brazilians 1-0 in overtime!), and more Track and Field Athletes.  But the only blemish?  A sure Gold but turned to Silver?  The Women’s Softball team losing to Japan in the final.  The only Olympic non-Gold medal given to the USA since Softball became an Olympic sport.  Not only do we need to check the Chinese gymnast’s ages, we also need to check under the Japanese pitcher’s skirt for a penis.  She looked quite man-ish.

-The Redeem team is looking to dethrone Manu Ginobili and Argentina in the Semifinals today (Friday).  Be sure to look for those results.

GO USA!!!

    Hi Clayton,
I have found a nice widget that displays the result for both total medal count and gold medal count.

In addition this widget can visualize the medal tally from different perspectives:
1: medal count per million dollar GDP
2: medal count per million inhabitants

I think you might like it:

The Greatest Story of 2008: Even Chubby Would Be Proud

Knowing that people out there still love and appreciate “Teen Wolf” brings great joy to my heart, similar to the way Boof made me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. And so we have the story of the former Greg White - now Stylez G. White.

Mr. White is a defensive end for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers who decided to honor “Wolf Fever” by officially changing his name to Stylez G. White. So it’s not EXACTLY the same way that “Stiles” spelled it in the movie, but close enough. After all, the original Stiles was the inspiration behind the legal name change for Mr. White. In particular, the classic performance of “Win In The End” that plays during the final championship basketball game scene most likely won him over.

Stylez G. White, I salute thee. If I was Scotty, I would tear open a beer with my wolf chompers in your honor. Thank you for passing on the love of an 80’s pop culture legend to a new generation. I know Chubby would be proud.
